Dear fellow pirates,
Next week there will be a workshop at the European Parliament about data
protection policymaking organised by one of the greens MEPs. On Wednesday
26th the workshop will focus on public data (health, security, etc) and
Thursday 27th on private data (search engines, data mining, etc).
It seems that international police databases are being set up without
enough justification, and there will be some talks about cloud services
legislation, that will surely put the PRISM scandal on the table.
Josep Jover, a candidate and lawyer from Pirates de Catalunya as well as
coordinator of the legal group of the 15M movement, has been invited by the
Greens Group to go and talk about the indiscriminate arrests and
identifications policy that the Spanish government is carrying out against
pacific demonstrators.
Jover is the lawyer that defeated the SGAE (the Spanish MPAA and RIAA) in
court, having Spain's private copying levy declared illegal in October
2010, and had its leaders arrested on corruption charges a year and a half
later. He was leading the legal team of the complaints from the Megaupload
campaign, and he has also been leading a series of legal initiatives,
which benefited from European international cooperation, to protect the
rights of the EU citizens.
Given that the scope of the event deals with one of our basic pillars, I
think that we should take a close look at this workshop at the European
Parliament and include the points regarding our concerns in our programmes
for the European Elections.
Unfortunately, at the moment it's unlikely that we will be able to send
participants to this meeting. Any chance that pirates from other parties
where planning to attend and share their conclusions to make sure we can
profit from this workshop's insight?
Best regards,
Muriel
